Ted Yoho and Yvonne Hayes Hinson were both candidates in the 2020 Republican primary for Florida's 3rd Congressional District. Ted Yoho was the incumbent, having served in the US House of Representatives since 2013. Yvonne Hayes Hinson was a political newcomer and a former teacher.
The primary election was closely watched, as Yoho had announced that he would not seek reelection after serving four terms in Congress. The race included a number of controversies, including Yoho's derogatory remarks towards Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which he later apologized for.
In the end, Ted Yoho won the primary with 52.9% of the vote, while Yvonne Hayes Hinson received 47.1% of the vote. Yoho went on to serve out the remainder of his term, but did not seek reelection in 2020 as he had previously announced. The seat was ultimately won by Republican Kat Cammack in the general election.
